The baby rats are getting bigger and it appears that we have two girls and one boy. The boy is named Jem, and the girls are Annie and Scout. Annie is the rat with only one eye (it just didn't develop), and she is quite the "roost ruler". Jem is actually the sweetest and the prettiest, but we really don't want to house him all alone in ANOTHER cage!! (OK, well to be fair, Matt doesn't because aquarium cleaning is him job.....) We will have to find a very good home for him before we let him go though.
I am actually starting our rat research project in my physiology class this week, so I will be spending about 15 hours/week for the next two weeks injecting rats (with ethanol) and running them through a maze that tests their spatial working memory. It should be interesting, but we have to do it under a red light (like you have in a dark room) and my eyes are going to be VERY unhappy by the time we are done! It is the first time I have conducted an experiment using live animals, so it will be good experience. All of my other experiments used deceased rats (PNNL internships).
